An apparthotel (Americans usually say apartment hotel) is a hotel where the room works like a small apartment: somewhere to cook, room to spread out, and a hotel team still in the building. That's us. We're 33 suites in a 1920s Beaux-Arts brownstone at 24 East 39th Street, between Park and Madison, and our studios come with kitchenettes you can actually cook in. This is New York, made residential.
Here's what that means in practice, suite by suite, and what we don't have, so you can decide before you book.
Which of our suites have a kitchenette
Three of our room types have a kitchenette: the Queen Studio, the King Studio and the Penthouse Suite. Everything else in the house is a hotel room in the usual sense, with a coffee machine and a mini-fridge but no cooktop.
| Suite | Bed | Size | Kitchen | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Queen Studio | Queen | 215 sq ft | Kitchenette: two-burner cooktop, toaster, cookware | One room, laid out so a week works as easily as a night |
| King Studio | King, plus a lounge area | 334 sq ft | Same kitchenette | Dedicated workspace; some have a marble fireplace |
| Penthouse Suite | Queen | Top floor | Kitchenette with a two-burner cooktop | A terrace of its own, with the skyline past it |
| Standard Queen Room | Queen | Compact | Coffee machine and mini-fridge only | The simplest room in the house |
| Double Room | Two beds | Sleeps four | No kitchenette | For friends or a family sharing |
We have five Queen Studios and two King Studios, so if a kitchen matters to you, book early rather than hoping for an upgrade.
What's actually in the kitchenette
The kitchenette is set up for cooking, not just reheating. In the studios you get a two-burner cooktop, a toaster, cookware that goes past the token pan, plus plates, mugs, cups and utensils. There's a coffee machine, a mini-fridge and a water kettle within reach of the bed, and a Smart TV with Roku for the nights you'd rather eat in.
It's a kitchenette, not a family kitchen. Think eggs and coffee before a museum morning, pasta after a long day, or a bottle opened in your suite before you head downstairs. For anything bigger, Midtown has more restaurants than you'll get through.
What a longer stay needs
The things that make a week or a month work are in the building. Laundry is on site, which is what a long stay actually needs. Wifi holds up to a working day, and the King Studio has a dedicated workspace by the window. Every suite has air conditioning, an iron and ironing board, and a hair dryer.
The suites themselves don't repeat. Each one was designed with William Engel, a Chelsea artist, using bold colour against monochrome walls, so the room you come back to every evening feels like somewhere rather than anywhere. Your suite is a living work of art.
What we don't have
We're honest about the trade. There's no gym, and no restaurant beyond the Raines Law Room, the cocktail bar on our ground floor. Our team is on site until 11 PM. It's a 1920s building and we haven't smoothed it out, which means some suites involve stairs.
If steps are a problem, tell us before you book. Our accessible Standard Queen Room has a roll-in rain shower, grab bars and step-free access to the lobby and the room.
Smoking isn't allowed anywhere in the building, and pets stay home. Children of any age are welcome, and so are service animals (it helps to tell us in advance).
Where you'll be
We're on East 39th between Park and Madison. Bryant Park is a short walk west and Grand Central is a few minutes on foot, so most of Manhattan is one train away.
The Morgan Library & Museum is three blocks down, on Madison Avenue at 36th Street. It's open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 AM to 5 PM, with Fridays running late to 8 PM, and it's closed Mondays. Adult admission is $25. On a longer stay it's the kind of place you can go back to, rather than rushing through once.
From the airports, LaGuardia is about 30 minutes out and JFK a little further. We can arrange a flat-rate car if you'd rather not deal with it after a flight.
Booking a longer stay with us
Check-in is after 3 PM and check-out is at 11 AM. If you're arriving early, tell us your time and we'll do what availability allows; if the suite isn't ready, we'll keep your luggage safe.
Non-refundable rates are charged in full when you book and can't be changed, so read the rate before you commit on a long stay. Cancellations come by email to reservations@thewilliamnyc.com, not by phone or message. We take Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
Let me know what you're after and I'll point you toward the real version of it.
